DESALINATION & FISH COOLING FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY, ZANZIBAR

ECOBARGE received financing from Smart City Sweden and conducted a pre-feasibility study for mobile sustainable infrastructure solutions for resort and fishing community integrated into barges on Pemba Island, Zanzibar.

One of the objectives of the ECOBARGE project is to enhance sustainable fisheries management, access to clean and efficient cooling systems and contribute to social impacts on improving livelihood and food security of the coastal community. The project is also expected to improve preservation of fish stock, reduce post harvest losses and restore marine habitats.

The project will provide clean water and fish cooling and processing for the local communities. It is considered as a pilot plant for testing the services at the Communities in Micheweni district (the villages Kijijini, Mnarani, Mtondoo Jeuri and Makangale) on Pemba, an island north of Zanzibar.

We expect that the project will contribute to solving the major challenges of Zanzibar and for scaling of Swedish technologies.
From the ECOBARGE team, we wish to express thank you to Zanrec Plastics Ltd., Kwanini Foundation and The Manta Resort.
